Three 19-year-old men face Class X felony armed robbery charges after police say they displayed a handgun and robbed two women in the 1700 block of W. Ogden Avenue, near the Jewel-Osco at 1759 W. Ogden Ave., around 4 a.m. Thursday, June 18.
Naperville Police arrested all three suspects the same day, recovering two firearms and stolen property within hours of the incident, according to a department press release published Monday, June 22.
Davyon Toney, 19, of the 500 block of Northgate Circle in Oswego; Jalen Green, 19, of the 700 block of Violet Circle in Naperville; and Tyrell Mays, 19, of the 2800 block of Troon Drive in Montgomery are each charged with two counts of armed robbery with a firearm (Class X felony) and one count of mob action (Class 4 felony). Toney and Green each face two additional counts of aggravated battery (Class 3 felony).
All three have been denied pre-trial release and are scheduled to appear in DuPage County court on Monday, July 13.
What police say happened
The two female victims arrived at the location around 4 a.m. after one of them arranged to fight Mays, who was known to the women, according to court records cited by the Naperville Sun. Mays allegedly ordered the women an Uber from Chicago to Naperville after discussing the fight during a FaceTime call.
During the fight between Mays and one victim, Toney and Green allegedly pushed the second woman into a fence. Green allegedly struck her in the head with a handgun and took a backpack containing a firearm, court records show. Mays and Green then allegedly ordered both women to surrender all their possessions.
Both women called 911. Police located Mays a short time later trying to leave the area in a ride-share, allegedly in possession of the stolen firearm.
A search warrant executed at Green's residence on the 700 block of Violet Circle that afternoon led to the arrest of Green and Toney and the recovery of the handgun allegedly used during the robbery.
Sentencing exposure
Under Illinois law, armed robbery with a firearm carries a mandatory minimum of six years in prison with no eligibility for probation. Firearm enhancements can add 15 to 25 years on top of the base sentence.
Police Chief Jason Arres said the arrests demonstrate "a department-wide approach to public safety," crediting patrol officers, Special Response Team members, and detectives for resolving the case within hours.
