Naperville police made 11 arrests over a 72-hour stretch from Friday, June 12, through Sunday, June 14.
Arrests including two separate hate crime charges, a felony-level theft on Ogden Avenue, a burglary in southwest Naperville, and an attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on West Diehl Road.
The most serious incident drew a joint press release from DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres. 29-year-old Jeffrey Feigenbaum was arrested on June 13 for two counts of hate crime (Class 4 felony), battery, and disorderly conduct. Police said Feigenbaum yelled a racial slur at a 9-year-old child in the 1400 block of West Jefferson Avenue, shoved the child, and threw the boy's bike as he fled.
The boy had knocked on a door after Feigenbaum's girlfriend damaged a fort he and friends had built. Feigenbaum appeared in court Sunday, June 14. A judge denied the state's motion to detain him but ordered GPS monitoring, required him to stay at least 5,000 feet from the victim and surrender all firearms.
His next court date is Monday, July 13, before Judge Daniel Guerin.
Chief Arres said conduct involving "threats, physical aggression, and racial slurs directed at a child is completely unacceptable and stands in direct opposition to the values we expect and uphold in Naperville."
A second hate crime arrest came June 14 at 8:12 p.m. in the 500 block of South Washington Street, near the Riverwalk in downtown Naperville. A 37-year-old Aurora man was charged. No named suspect, additional details, or press release have been issued as of Tuesday, June 23.
