Naperville Central's baseball season ended Saturday, June 13, with an 11-2 loss to Mount Carmel in the IHSA Class 4A third-place game at Slammers Stadium in Joliet.
The Redhawks still brought home a state trophy from their first tournament appearance since winning the 2010 championship.
Naperville Central scored in the first inning before Mount Carmel answered with nine unanswered runs to pull away. The Redhawks finished 30-11.
The loss followed Friday's 9-1 semifinal defeat to Maine South, which snapped a 15-game winning streak. In that game, senior left fielder Michael Page went 2-for-3 with a walk and scored Naperville Central's lone run. Senior third baseman Grant Umbright matched him at 2-for-3 with a walk.
The postseason run started with a 4-2 supersectional win over Minooka on Tuesday, June 9, where Umbright went 3-for-3, stole home in the fourth inning, and pitched three innings of relief allowing one run.
"He's the best player in the state," head coach Mike Stock said of Umbright after that game. "I could be wrong, but I believe it wholeheartedly."
Page, committed to North Central College, batted .383 on the season and hit safely in 14 of 15 conference games. He anchored a roster with 17 seniors.
It was the program's first trip to state since Bill Seiple's squad went 38-4 and won the Class 4A title in 2010. NCHS Athletics confirmed on X the night of June 13 that the athletic year "officially comes to a close with a trophy."
