A driver died in a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 88 near Mill Street at 10:58 p.m. Saturday, July 4, and at least one other driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. The highway was shut down for more than four hours on one of the busiest travel nights of the holiday weekend.

Illinois State Police said troopers responded to the eastbound lanes near Mill Street for reports of multiple crashes. The sequence began with a two-vehicle collision. A third driver approaching the scene attempted to slow down and was rear-ended by a fourth vehicle, according to ISP. The driver of the car that was rear-ended was pronounced dead at the scene.

ISP said Sunday, July 5, it has not confirmed whether the arrested driver was involved in the fatal rear-end collision or the initial two-vehicle crash.

The highway reopened around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, July 5.

What we don't know yet

Illinois State Police have not released the victim's name, the suspect's identity, or the ISP incident report number. No charges or case numbers had appeared in DuPage County court records at jis.dupageco.org as of Sunday, July 5. The ISP incident report can be requested through ISP District 5 or through the city's FOIA portal at naperville.il.us. Naper Today will update this story when more information becomes available.

Holiday enforcement campaign was already active

The fatal crash happened while the Naperville Police Department was running an Independence Day traffic enforcement campaign through Monday, July 6, targeting impaired and unbuckled drivers. The department joined ISP and more than 200 local agencies statewide for the effort, funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Naperville Police Sgt. Eric Muska, in the department's campaign announcement, urged residents and visitors to designate a sober driver and said officers would be "out in full force to keep impaired drivers off the road."

I-88, the Reagan Memorial Tollway, is a daily commuter corridor for Naperville residents traveling between Route 59 and points east toward Chicago. The crash near Mill Street occurred on a stretch that sees heavy holiday traffic.
