A homeowner on the 1000 block of Williamsburg Drive walked away uninjured on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 14, after an attic fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the residence and its contents.
The fire was contained to the attic, and the rest of the home remained habitable. The homeowner was able to stay in the house after crews finished their work.
The Naperville Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call at 3:57 p.m. reporting smoke inside the residence, according to a city press release. Dispatchers sent an initial dual response of two fire suppression vehicles. When firefighters arrived and completed a 360-degree survey of the structure, they found smoke and a small active fire in the attic. All occupants had already evacuated.
The department then escalated to a full-still response, adding two engines, one truck, one medic unit, and two battalion vehicles. Firefighters extinguished the fire, ventilated the structure, and searched for fire extension and any remaining life safety concerns. Crews overhauled the fire area and extinguished smoldering embers to ensure the hazard was fully contained. The Naperville Police Department assisted on scene.
Fire investigators determined the cause was unintentional. No civilians or firefighters were injured.
The city has not identified the homeowner or released details about what ignited the fire. The press release states only that the initial investigation deemed the cause unintentional, and no follow-up investigation date has been announced.
