A free three-night concert series debuts in downtown Naperville this July, and your family doesn't need tickets, a reservation, or anything but a blanket and an appetite.
Park After Dark, produced by the Downtown Naperville Alliance, runs Friday, July 17, through Sunday, July 19, at the Naperville Community Concert Center in Central Park, 104 E. Benton Ave. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. each evening, with headliners taking the stage at 7:30 p.m.
Three nights, three acts
Friday belongs to Michael Mahler, a Richard Rodgers Award-winning composer and Northwestern grad whose Broadway credits include Miss Saigon. His "Feelin' Groovy" show covers Paul Simon classics: "The Sound of Silence," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Mrs. Robinson," and "You Can Call Me Al," among others. The Chicago Sun-Times has called Mahler "insanely talented."
Saturday brings The Lovettes, performing hits by female icons of the 1950s and 1960s. Sunday closes with Better Together, a soul group channeling Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles.
Co-producers Arranmore Events and Freightwood Creative Production are handling stage design and lighting beyond the venue's typical concert setup.
What the kids can do
Before and between sets, Chicago family entertainment group Adventure Sandwich leads interactive activities starting at 6:30 p.m. Each night also features a Cardboard Creative Studio, designed by Freightwood and sponsored by DJK Custom Homes, where kids build their own structures and stage props out of cardboard.
Dinner without leaving the park
Eight downtown restaurants are selling "picnic packs" to go for concertgoers: The George, Empire, Allegory, Tapville, Fiammé, The Belmont, Hugo's Frog Bar and Fish House, and Cookie Dough Creations. Pricing and ordering details haven't been published yet — check individual restaurant websites or downtownnaperville.com/events/park-after-dark for updates. You're also welcome to bring your own picnic.
What we don't know yet
The Downtown Naperville Alliance has not published event-specific parking guidance, accessibility details (wheelchair, stroller, or sensory-friendly accommodations), or a rain cancellation policy. For updates, visit downtownnaperville.com or contact DNA directly.
