Naperville's Independence Day fireworks, postponed more than five weeks in summer 2026, could come with a cancellation clause in 2027.
The Naperville Park District board discussed a proposed $57,000 contract with Mad Bomber Fireworks for next year's show at its Thursday, Sept. 24 meeting, NCTV17 reported. The price is flat from 2026. But for 2027, board members want a way out if weather strikes again.
Board member Rich Janor raised the question directly: "For some of these contracts, if an event is canceled due to weather or Canadian wildfires and smoke or whatever other reason would cancel it, would we have the option not to reschedule and use those funds for something else?"
The question carries weight. Naperville's 2026 fireworks show, originally set for July 4, was canceled due to inclement weather and rescheduled for Aug. 8 at Frontier Sports Complex, 3380 Cedar Glade Drive. The rescheduled show did not include the Naperville Municipal Band pre-show concert.
Derke Price, legal counsel for the Park District, said fireworks companies prefer rescheduling over cancellation because prepared pyrotechnics have a shelf life once prepared. He described a possible graduated refund structure, comparing it to past Ribfest protocols: a cancellation two weeks out would yield a larger refund than one on the day of the show.
District officials recommended waiving competitive bidding for the contract, citing the small number of companies that provide large-scale fireworks shows. The Park District and the city of Naperville split the cost, though the exact breakdown has not been made public.
Board Chair Leslie Ruffing said residents were pleased the 2026 show went on despite the delay. The Aug. 8 date was chosen based on available municipal and Park District resources and the summer event calendar.
A formal vote on the 2027 contract is expected at the Park District's next board meeting, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Fort Hill Activity Center.
