The storefront at 8 W. Jefferson Ave. that once housed a CBD shop now smells like cinnamon and fried dough.

Lola's Handcrafted Churros held its grand opening Sept. 28 in downtown Naperville, according to a local real estate blog tracking downtown openings.

The shop is the third location for owner Mayra Serna, who opened her first store in Lisle in 2022 and a second in Yorkville.

Serna, 38, immigrated to the United States at 14 and spent her teenage years in Wheaton, where she and her friends would wander downtown Naperville for fun.

In a June Chicago Tribune profile, Serna said she remembered stopping at Naper Nuts & Sweets for popcorn at 16. Her new shop sits right next door.

"I guess never in a million years I would imagine being part of such an amazing community, but it just feels right," Serna told the Tribune in June.

The recipe behind Lola's took five years to develop, Patch reported. Serna set out to recreate the crispy-outside, soft-inside churros she knew from growing up in Mexico.

She and her sisters, Naomi and Lulu, built the business around those childhood flavors.

The churros are twisted into oval-shaped loops and topped with everything from chocolate coatings to Fruity Pebbles. Standout items include the Cookie Butter Crunch, served with Biscoff cookies, and the Matcha and Fruity Pebbles, a nod to Serna's favorite drink from her days as a Starbucks barista, according to Patch.

The most popular item is the churro sundae at $11.50. It pairs a topped churro with soft-serve ice cream in flavors like Nutella and strawberries or cookies and cream. The menu also includes milkshakes at $7.25, mango lemonade at $5.25 and the Lola's latte at $5.25, an espresso drink with horchata-flavored milk and edible rose petals.

The space at 8 W. Jefferson Ave. was previously occupied by Kerwell, a CBD store, the Tribune reported in June.

The Naperville location is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
