The LA Fitness at 2780 Fitness Drive shut its doors for good on Wednesday, Aug. 5, leaving members of the Route 59 gym searching for a new place to work out.

The closure, reported by the Chicago Tribune, marks the second Naperville LA Fitness to go dark in three years. The chain's Freedom Commons location closed in March 2023; that building has since been purchased by a subsidiary of Advocate Health for conversion into a medical facility, according to CoStar.

Fitness International, which operates LA Fitness, did not respond to a request for comment on the Fitness Drive shutdown. The closure is part of a broader summer 2026 wave of LA Fitness closings that has hit locations in Downers Grove, Cordova, Tennessee, Tacoma, Washington, and East Cobb, Georgia.

One LA Fitness remains in Naperville: the Route 59 Signature Club at 3116 S. Route 59.

The Federal Trade Commission has sued Fitness International over allegations the chain makes it "exceedingly difficult" for consumers to cancel memberships. That lawsuit remains pending.

What's coming

The gym's exit arrives as two new fitness brands prepare to plant flags in Naperville.

As we reported Aug. 4, Life Time plans to open a 102,000-square-foot athletic country club at 4111 Tower Court in early 2027. The Naperville City Council sold 12.55 acres at the southeast corner of Route 59 and 103rd Street to Life Time's real estate arm for $6.56 million in 2023. Dan DeBaun, Life Time's public relations manager, told the Tribune the early 2027 timeline is on track but said pricing and presale details are still being finalized.

Closer to opening day is JETSET Pilates, a Miami-based chain planning a mid-to-late October debut at 2555 W. 75th St. in Springbrook Prairie Pavilion. Naperville general manager Jessica Herrera told the Tribune the studio is part of a larger Chicago-area expansion for the brand, which has 70 locations open across the U.S., U.K. and Australia.

JETSET will host a preview Mat Pilates class at Hotel Arista on Sunday, Aug. 16. The class costs $25 and advance registration is required at AristaSpaSalon.com. A wellness marketplace featuring vendors including Kendra Scott and Regenerate Boutique will accompany the event.

What's unknown

No plans for the now-vacant Fitness Drive building have been announced. The future use of the space, situated next to Costco on one of Naperville's busiest retail corridors, remains an open question for the Route 59 business community.
