Lane closures on Route 59 between McCoy Drive and Artesian Road will stretch into November as a $4.6 million resurfacing project nears its finish.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) expected to begin the final asphalt-paving phase in October along the corridor, which runs through Naperville and Aurora. The agency projects a November completion but has not set a specific end date, as first reported by NCTV17 on Friday, Oct. 2.

The project launched July 13. It has brought intermittent daytime lane closures to the north-south corridor for nearly three months.

Overnight paving, daytime delays

Maria Castaneda, an IDOT spokesperson, told NCTV17 that the paving work will happen mostly at night.

"To have the least impact on the motoring public, that portion of the project will mainly take place in the overnight hours," Castaneda said.

Daytime and occasional overnight lane closures will continue until the project is finished. Crews are also completing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and patching concrete pavement along the corridor.

What drivers should know

IDOT is advising motorists to expect delays and allow extra travel time when passing through the work zone. The agency encourages drivers to consider alternate routes, follow posted speed limits and watch for flaggers and construction equipment.

No firm date exists.

Access to businesses and homes within the work zone will stay open throughout construction, according to IDOT's project announcement.

No exact end date yet

Castaneda told NCTV17 the project remains on track but said an exact completion date has not been determined. IDOT's original July announcement projected a November finish without naming a specific day.

The city of Naperville has not published a separate advisory about the Route 59 work as of Monday, Oct. 5.
