Naperville cyclists who ride through downtown and worry about the crossing at Aurora Avenue and Eagle Street have a chance to tell the city what needs fixing on Thursday, Sept. 3.

The Transportation Advisory Board (TAB) meets at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St., to hear public comment on the city's proposed Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan update. Residents who want to speak must sign up in person starting at 6:30 p.m.

The meeting follows a two-hour walk-through of the downtown bike path on Aug. 20, when Mayor Scott Wehrli, Councilman Ian Holzhauer and members of the Downtown Advisory Committee toured the central business district and the Naperville Riverwalk. The group assessed how the existing path connects to local streets and where it falls short.

"Current bicycle crossing at Aurora and Eagle is dangerous," Holzhauer wrote on Facebook after the Aug. 20 walk, noting a "strong preference to re-route bikes so they instead cross" at another location.

Riverwalk Commission Chair Johnna Shields called for better street markings during the walk, suggesting a different color to outline bike lanes, Positively Naperville reported. Naperville Development Partnership President Monica Conners proposed naming individual bike routes once safe corridors are identified. Participants also flagged a need for more bike racks downtown.

Bike racks are scarce.

The ideas were recorded for Sydney Smith, the project manager in Naperville's Transportation, Engineering and Development (TED) Business Group who is leading the plan update. Smith is overseeing what the city calls a multi-decade update to its bike and pedestrian network, the first major revision in years.

Better bike connectivity in Naperville has been discussed for nearly 30 years, according to Positively Naperville. DAC member and Naperville resident Rick Hitchcock, who joined the Aug. 20 tour, said he hopes the cycling community will turn out at the Sept. 3 meeting to add its voice.

No timeline for when the updated plan will go before the City Council has been announced. The full TAB meeting agenda has not been confirmed on the city's legislative portal.
