Breakdancers will compete for cash prizes at the Naperville Riverwalk starting Friday, Sept. 4, as the 61st annual Last Fling festival brings a brand-new showdown to the Labor Day weekend lineup.

The Naperville Jaycees' free four-day festival runs through Monday, Sept. 7. The biggest new draw is "Riverwalk Breaks," a one-on-one breakdancing competition at the Riverwalk Amphitheater from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. The adult winner takes home $300; the youth winner gets $200.

The competition is open to youths, teens and adults, the Chicago Tribune reported. DJs Virgil 7 and Jillian X will spin during the battles, with judges Bochi, Dozy Fresh and Vital scoring each round. The event is co-sponsored by Stylin' Out.

"We have area-recognized DJs and judges that are going to be there," Last Fling public relations chair Karen Coleman said. "We are really excited about it."

Four nights of headliners

Live music fills the Jackson Avenue Main Stage each night: Hairbangers Ball on Friday, Hillbilly Rockstarz on Saturday, Sixteen Candles on Sunday and Hi Infidelity on Monday. A Beer Garden Stage also features live acts daily.

KidsMatter leads the parade

Youth nonprofit KidsMatter will serve as grand marshal of the Labor Day Parade on Monday, Sept. 7, marking the organization's 25th anniversary. The parade steps off at 10 a.m. at Naperville North High School, travels through downtown and ends at Naperville Central High School. NCTV17 will broadcast the parade live on air and online.

Coleman said the Jaycees chose KidsMatter because of a long partnership between the two organizations. The parade typically draws between 50,000 and 60,000 spectators, Coleman said, with about 90 entries.

KidsMatter CEO and Executive Director Nina Menis said in a press release that the organization is "incredibly grateful to each of the community leaders and partners who have helped KidsMatter … for the past 25 years."

What to know before you go

Hours: 5 to 10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.

Admission: Free.

Carnival rides: The mega pass for unlimited rides costs $100 at the main ticket booth at Jackson Avenue and Eagle Street. Single-day wristbands are also available. A low-stress carnival session for patrons with special needs runs 10 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Safety rules: Only clear bags are allowed on festival grounds. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by someone 21 or older, with a maximum of five minors per adult.

Food and drink: Seventeen vendors line Jackson Avenue selling pizza, bratwursts, tacos, pierogis, roasted corn and shaved ice. New vendor Candy Shenanigans joins the lineup. Adults 21 and older can sample free tastings at the beverage tent, which Coleman said features the festival's largest selection ever, including 14 types of adult beverages and nonalcoholic options from Go Brewing.

Veterans lunch: A free Veterans Appreciation Lunch begins at noon Monday at the sponsors tent for anyone with a military ID.
