K-9 demos, a simulated DUI arrest and a flashover fire demonstration headline Naperville's Public Safety Open House on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Public Safety Campus, 1380 Aurora Ave. The Naperville Police and Fire Departments host the open house each fall as part of Public Safety Month under the banner "Partner for Prevention," according to the city's event page. This year's theme is "Prepare, Practice, and Prevent."

The lineup also includes a Haz Mat Team demonstration, a Crime Stoppers booth and fingerprint-lifting stations, Positively Naperville reported. Visitors can walk through a large display of police and fire vehicles and equipment. Kids can bounce in the fire truck jumpy, and Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog will make appearances.

Food trucks will be on site.

If it's available, the city's restored 1924 Ahrens-Fox fire engine will also be on display. The vintage apparatus, Naperville's second motorized fire apparatus, has been a popular attraction at past open houses and in city parades. The city has not confirmed whether the engine will be present on Sept. 26.

The open house marks a transition for the fire department's community outreach. Soraya McLaughlin, who spent 14 years as the Naperville Fire Department's Community Education Specialist and wrote the long-running "Fire Prevention 24-7" column for Positively Naperville, recently retired.
