Illinois school districts can now apply for a share of $48.7 million in state property tax relief grants, with a Jan. 13, 2027, deadline that puts the program squarely on the radar for Naperville families in District 203 and Indian Prairie District 204.
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) opened the FY 2027 Property Tax Relief Grant (PTRG) application on Oct. 26, according to the agency's grant page. Districts must submit applications through the state's IWAS portal by 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 13.
The stakes are real. Districts that receive the grant are required to abate property taxes for three consecutive years. In plain terms, a winning district would lower the property tax levy it collects from homeowners, with the state grant replacing the lost revenue.
ISBE ranks applicants by comparing each district's Adjusted Operating Tax Rate to the statewide average for its organization type. Districts with higher relative tax rates rank higher for funding. The total available for FY 2027 is $48,741,500, according to ISBE. If a district fails to abate taxes in the second or third year, the grant is removed from its base funding permanently.
Neither District 203 nor District 204 has publicly announced whether it plans to apply for this cycle.
The grant arrives as District 203 faces budget pressure. A May 4 budget presentation showed the district projecting a $3,975,408 operating deficit for FY 2027, with total operating revenue of $366.2 million against $370.1 million in expenditures. The district also reported that proration of state reimbursements cost it $2.3 million in FY 2026.
A district financial fact sheet classified District 203 as a Tier 4 district under Evidence-Based Funding as of FY 2025, meaning it was funded above adequacy and received the least state aid under the formula. That tier status could affect how the district ranks in the PTRG process, though the specific impact is unclear without current tax rate data.
No comparable FY 2027 budget data for Indian Prairie District 204 was available for this report.
The full grant details, including the two-step calculation methodology, are posted on ISBE's PTRG page. Applications close Jan. 13, 2027.
