Students at Naperville North, Naperville Central, and every District 203 school could get two extra days of spring break next year, but they'd finish the school year two days later in May.
District 203 administrators are proposing a two-day extension to spring break for the 2026-27 school year. If adopted, the last day of school moves from Monday, May 24, 2027, to Wednesday, May 26, 2027, for all of the district's more than 16,000 students. The proposal was discussed at the Board of Education's Monday, July 20, meeting at the Administration Center, 203 W. Hillside Rd.
How the calendar would change
Under the current 2026-27 calendar, spring break begins Friday, March 26, 2027, with classes resuming Monday, April 5. Students would then have an e-learning day on Tuesday, April 6, which is Election Day for the consolidated spring election.
The proposed change eliminates that e-learning day entirely. Instead of logging on from home on April 6, students at Lincoln Junior High, Jefferson Junior High, Washington Junior High, and all District 203 elementary schools would simply stay on break two extra days, returning to class Wednesday, April 7. The spring break start date of Friday, March 26, stays the same.
The trade-off: those two days get added to the end of the school year.
NCTV17 reported on Wednesday, July 22, that the proposal remains in a "preliminary stage," according to district officials. No board vote has been taken.
Fiscal context
The calendar discussion comes during a tight fiscal year for the district, which approved a 2026-27 operating budget with a $3.9 million deficit after eliminating 59 positions and cutting school-site budgets by 15%. The district's five-year forecast projects growing deficits through fiscal year 2030 unless further action is taken. The calendar change itself does not add or remove instructional days.
