The budget that funds every classroom at Naperville North, Naperville Central, and schools across District 203 officially took effect in July with a $3.9 million hole in it. On Monday, July 20, the board that approved that deficit meets for the first time since the new fiscal year began.
The District 203 Board of Education convenes at 7 p.m. at the Administration Center, 203 W. Hillside Road. How we got here
The $3.9 million operating deficit the board approved in June, according to a June 17 Naperville Sun report, is smaller than the $12.4 million structural shortfall the district faced earlier this year. In March, the board unanimously rejected a proposed reduction in force that would have cut approximately 97 certified staff positions for the 2026-27 school year, as reported by the Central Times, Naperville Central's student newspaper.
"We [teachers] are numbers. We are not humans," Naperville North teacher and coach Will DeBolt said in March 2026, when his name appeared on the proposed RIF list. The quote was reported in The North Star, Naperville North's student newspaper.
The board chose a smaller set of budget reductions instead of mass layoffs. The $3.9 million gap leaves open the question of whether further staffing or program cuts will follow that March decision. District 203 serves more than 16,000 students across two high schools, three junior highs, and its elementary schools, including Elmwood, Meadow Glens, Scotch Plains, and Ranch View.
